Colored face masks to be inspected for harmful substances

Taipei, Jan. 3 (CNA) Taiwan s Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection will begin random inspections of colored face masks on Monday to check if the products contain toxic substances, such as some regulated azo dye components.
The bureau under the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) is planning to purchase 70 regular face masks from physical stores and online shops for the safety check, Lai Chun-chieh (賴俊杰), chief of the bureau s inspection section, said on Sunday.
The inspections will also determine whether the amount of formaldehyde exceeds the legal limit, he said, adding that the results of the inspection will be available in two weeks at the soonest.

Taipei, Jan. 2 (CNA) Six newly imported COVID-19 cases were reported in Taiwan Saturday, including a British man who was found to have a high viral load, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC).
CECC spokesman Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥) told reporters that the man, in his 30s, who arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday, took a test Thursday during his mandatory quarantine which came back positive on Saturday.
Citing the test results, Chuang said the man had a CT level of 18, indicating a relatively high viral load.
In Taiwan, a CT level under 35 is considered a positive test.

The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday reported six imported cases of COVID-19 from Indonesia, the Philippines, the UK and the US three of whom showed symptoms in Taiwan.
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Deputy Director-General Chuang Jen-hsiang (莊人祥), who is the CECC’s spokesman, said one of the cases is a British man in his 30s who arrived in Taiwan for work on Wednesday.
