TAIPEI: Taiwan has agreed to buy almost 20 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, including 10 million from AstraZeneca, the government said on Wednesday (Dec 30), adding that it had confirmed the island s first case of the new British variant of the disease.
Taiwan has kept the pandemic well under control thanks to early and effective prevention and strict quarantine of all arrivals, with imported cases accounting for almost all its tally of 798, including seven deaths.

The island s Central Epidemic Command Centre said apart from AstraZeneca, it had agreed to buy 4.76 million doses from global vaccine programme COVAX, and was still in talks with another company it did not name.

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) Taiwan will impose more stringent border and quarantine restrictions in January, in response to a new variant of the COVID-19 virus that was first detected in the United Kingdom, the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Wednesday.
Starting Jan. 1, only Taiwan citizens, residents and people in a few other categories will be allowed to enter the country, said Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC.
The new policy revokes the current regulations that allow foreign nationals to enter Taiwan for internships, volunteer work, family visits and medical treatment.

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) A Taiwanese teenager who returned from the United Kingdom on Sunday has been confirmed to be infected with a new variant of the COVID-19 virus that was detected in the U.K., the Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) said Wednesday.
The boy had a fever when he landed on Sunday and was immediately sent to the hospital, and he was confirmed to have COVID-19 a day later, said Health and Welfare Minister Chen Shih-chung (陳時中), who heads the CECC.
