Virus Outbreak: CECC downplays results of blood test study

CECC downplays results of blood test study By Lee I-chia / Staff reporter The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) yesterday downplayed a study earlier this year by Taipei Veterans General Hospital that suggested about 11,800 adults in Taiwan might have contracted the virus that causes COVID-19, based on a seroprevalence rate of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 of 0.05 percent. The center said the study, which was published in the international medical journal Lancet Regional Health Western Pacific in October, cannot reflect the general population. The study’s researchers used residual specimens from blood tests administered to 14,765 adults that visited the hospital’s outpatient and emergency departments over two periods May 25 to 30 and July 6 to 8 and screened them for anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies.

Over the summer, Taipei Veterans General Hospital Department of Pathology s serological survey of over 14,000 people found that 11 persons had antibodies for SARS-CoV-2 in their blood. Based on these results, the researchers estimated that the positivity rate in Taiwan is five per 10,000, which based on its population, is equivalent to about 11,800 people.

Taiwan extends ban on Indonesian workers citing Covid-19 surge

4:53 PM MYT TAIPEI (Reuters): Taiwan s government on Wednesday (Dec 16) extended a ban on Indonesian workers coming to the island for an indefinite period, citing a surge in the number of infected people arriving and lack of cooperation from Indonesia s government in verifying documents. Taiwan is home to more than 250,000 migrant workers from Indonesia, which has the highest tally of virus infections and deaths in South-east Asia. They mostly work as domestic helpers. Taiwan last month announced a two-week suspension for the entry of Indonesian workers, which the government will now extend, the Central Epidemic Command Centre said. It did not give a date for when it will re-open entry for the workers, only that the government will make the decision depending on the pandemic situation in Indonesia.
