In rebuttal: Orlando Delogu: Proposed limitations on free speech are unwise

Read Article John Brautigam’s and Ron Fein’s April 7 Sun Journal article, urging Maine to “ban political spending by foreign-influenced corporations,” is disappointing. These men know better; in their adult lives each has worked for free speech and fair elections. Free and open speech is both constitutionally protected, and the cornerstone of a free society. Their distaste for Central Maine Power’s New England Clean Energy Connect project seems to have clouded their judgment; they assert “… foreign entities shouldn’t be able to influence our elections. New England Clean Energy Connect approved in Wilton

Read Article WILTON The Planning Board on Thursday evening approved Central Maine Power’s New England Clean Energy Connect pole construction application, adding four conditions to the permit. All members of the board approved the permit except Lisa Small who abstained. The permit allows the company to build five high-transmission poles across two miles of agricultural fields from McCrillis Corner Road to Wilton Road/Route 156. The poles will be part of CMP’s 145-mile corridor for transmitting Hydro-Québec energy from the province of Québec, Canada to Massachusetts. The red line indicates where the New England Clean Energy Connect corridor would cross through Farmington into Wilton over nearly two miles of forested and agricultural land.

Letter to the editor: Is honeymoon over between Gov Mills, CMP on NECEC?

Letter to the editor: Is honeymoon over between Gov. Mills, CMP on NECEC? Share After touting the advantages of Central Maine Power’s New England Clean Energy Connect and singing their praises, maybe Janet Mills has awakened to the reality that CMP’s NECEC offers little support reaching Maine’s zero-carbon goal. Since taking office, she’s been remarkably silent on the fact that CMP’s rating among business customers is the worst in the nation with no sign of improvement. CMP is privately owned by foreign interests and traded on the stock exchange. The only incentive for investors and owners is to increase their portfolio’s value, leaving no financial space or interest to reach Maine’s clean-energy goal.
