Fishing industry responds to continued COVID crisis, helps supply North Florida food banks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â With demand from restaurants still down due to the pandemic, north Florida fishermen have found a way to keep their small businesses alive while helping feed hundreds of neighbors in need. Their catch of fresh, local fish is heading to nearby food banks.
The Gulf of Mexico Reef Fish Shareholdersâ Alliance and Fish for America USA announced a collaborative effort to provide fresh, local seafood to food banks in north Florida as the organizations work to meet the continued, record need due to the lingering economic hardship created by COVID-19.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â Second Harvest of the Big Bend is offering medical services, employment opportunities, and legal services to communities that need them the most.
Starting Friday, community partners are joining Second Harvest in a two-month pilot program. Neighborhood Health Director Jeanne Freeman explained it's offering people a variety of in-demand assistance.
"We've visited several neighborhoods before this and this one we have not been to and done an outreach yet so we're excited about this being our first time," Freeman said.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) â Second Harvest of the Big Bend is getting ready for one of their biggest food distributions of the year.
On Saturday, Dec. 19, Governors Square Mall in Tallahassee will host Second Harvest's first holiday food distribution.
"We're really excited to be able to supply families this time with 60 pounds of food for each family and we're prepared to serve over 1,000 families," said Monique Van Pelt, President, and CEO of Second Harvest of the Big Bend.
