We have more information about a plane crash in Twentynine Palms yesterday. Sheriff’s deputies and paramedics were called to the area of Highway 62 and Mojave Road at 3:13 p.m. for a plane crash. According to Sheriff’s Deputy Wayne Greer, Donald Richie, 67, of Cedar Park, Texas, was flying a 1979 single-engine Lake LA-4 200 airplane from Petaluma to Texas and had stopped at the Twentynine Palms airport to refuel. After taking off, his plane couldn’t gain altitude, and Richie said he was trying to return to the airport. Greer said when Richie realized he wouldn’t make it to the runway, he thought about landing on Highway 62, until he saw the powerlines on the north side of the highway. Richie then decided to make an emergency landing in the open desert west of the airport. His plane collided with a stop sign and other business signs, and came to rest upside down. The County Coroner has identified the woman who was struck and killed by a vehicle on the highway in Twentynine Palms Thursday night as Amanda Tilton, 25, of Twentynine Palms. Tilton was crossing the highway near Estrella Avenue about 8:25 p.m. when she was hit. Amanda Tilton was taken by Morongo Basin Ambulance to Hi-Desert Medical Center where she was declared deceased about an hour later.

A Twentynine Palms girl was injured when she was hit by a car Friday afternoon. About 2:50 p.m., the 7-year-old girl was playing in her father’s wheelchair in the street at the intersection of El Paseo Drive and Abronia Avenue in Twentynine Palms when the wheelchair was struck by a vehicle. The driver of the car stopped immediately and called for help. The girl suffered a broken leg and was taken by Morongo Basin Ambulance to Hi-Desert Medical Center, where she was then flown to Loma Linda Children’s Hospital. Family friends have reported that the girl also has bleeding on her brain. A Sheriff’s Department investigation found that neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor in the crash.
A 59-year-old woman was injured Sunday during a crash of an off-road buggy and a passenger vehicle in the Pipes Canyon area north of Pioneertown. About 1:30 p.m., Morongo Basin Ambulance was called to the area of Acacia Avenue and Roadrunner Rut Road where they found the injured woman. She was taken to the Yucca Valley airport and flown to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. There were no other injuries in the crash.
