Cinema, for the longest time, had been thought of as a social experience, fit for the big screen. Though the arrival of television changed this somewhat, the last couple of years have driven daggers into the theatre experience. Even if theatres briefly showed a period of minor resurgence, audiences still seemed to remain hesitant, on account of the pandemic.
What, then, of fans who thrived on the social experience and revelled in the screen presence of their star? How are they handling the loss of the theatre experience? How are they dealing with the absence of whistles, confetti, flex banners… Vicky Ram, a self-confessed ‘Rajinikanth-crazy fan’ and a fan club member, begins by noting that ‘mass scenes’ need a ‘mass experience’ and that this can only be offered by theatres. “I can never watch OTT content with the same excitement,” he says.

Members of the film fraternity took to Twitter to express their grief. “Very saddened to hear of the passing of Joker Thulasi, a very wonderful person, has been in theatre & movies for many decades. Veteran actor Joker Thulasi, who is well known for appearing in television soap operas like Vani Rani, Kolangal, Azhagu and Keladi Kanmani, passed away due to COVID-19 on May 9. Members of the Tamil film fraternity like Radikaa Sarathkumar and Mohan Raman are mourning the loss of the veteran actor.

The actor has acted in many films in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. He made his debut with Tamil film Ungalil Oruthi (1976) and went on to act in film like Thamizhachi, Ilaignar Ani, Udan Pirappu, Avathara Purushan and Mannai Thottu Kumbidanum.

Veteran Tamil actor Joker Thulasi passed away on Sunday (May 9) due to Covid-19 complications in Chennai. The actor had made his lead debut in the Tamil film Maruthu Pandi along with Ramki and Seetha. The film was directed by Manoj Kumar. He has acted in many films in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada.
