Older residents now part of vaccination effort

By Editor | January 6, 2021 | by Kate Evans Morgan County’s older residents over the holidays started to receive their first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as it became available. Local medical practices and the Health Department alerted those over age 80 of the availability of a limited number of doses here in the county. Morgan County Health Department staff advertised and set up appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations for the priority age group of 80 years old and older on Wednesday, December 30 once vaccines were received. Health Department staff came in and administered vaccines on Thursday, December 31 for two hours by appointment despite the agency being closed for the holidays.

But, only those in healthcare fields have had access to the vaccines in local counties as health departments are giving prioritization based on Illinois Department of Public Health standards, which categorizes occupations and population groups based on risk and need.

Students return to in-school instruction January 19 under new state guidelines

West Virginia pre-K through eighth students will return to in-school instruction five days a week beginning Tuesday, January 19. Governor Jim Justice made the announcement earlier this week, laying out new guidelines under which public schools across the state would reopen. Local students in grades 9-12 may also start back to in-person instruction five days a week on January 19 as long as Morgan County isn’t red on the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) County Alert System Map .

IL Hits 16,000 COVID Deaths, West Central IL Infection Numbers Begin To Slow

The Morgan County Health Department received confirmation of 4 deaths and 60 new cases over the holiday. The deaths included a male and a female in their 80s as well as a male in his 60s at long-term care facilities, and a male in his 60s who died at home. Morgan County has now had 81 overall COVID-related deaths. Morgan County currently has 158 active cases with 12 of those hospitalized. 365 people are in quarantine. With the large total over the 5-day holiday, Morgan County has now had over 3,000 reported cases of the virus.

Death Toll Rises From COVID; State Announces More Vaccine Doses On the Way

The Morgan County Health Department reported 86 new cases today along with 5 additional deaths from over the weekend. The new deaths included 4 females in their 90s and one female in her 70s. All of the deceased were members of long-term care facilities. Morgan County currently has 296 active cases, with 13 of those remaining hospitalized. 316 people are currently in quarantine. Morgan County has now had 77 residents die due to the virus. The Cass County Health Department is reporting 19 new cases of Covid in Cass County. Five individuals received positive Covid results over the weekend; an additional 14 positive tests were reported today. The active case count is at 120, with 7 hospitalized in Cass County.
