‘In Our Mothers’ Gardens’: Film Review Lovia Gyarkye IN OUR MOTHERS GARDENS Still In Our Mothers’ Gardens, the feature directorial debut of Shantrelle P. Lewis, gingerly tends to the incandescent and sometimes knotty relationships between Black mothers and their daughters. The film, distributed by Ava DuVernay’s ARRAY and available on Netflix, takes inspiration in name and concept from Alice Walker’s 1972 essay “In Search of Our Mothers’ Gardens,” a still-brilliant meditation on the interior and artistic lives of Black women in America. Walker’s essay begins with several questions: How did the mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers of Black American women, forced into bondage and servitude, express themselves? Who were they? Fifty-two years ago, the U.S. entered a war that continues to reverberate through society, and in the lives of the veterans who survived it. Two of those veterans – Burnie Coats and David Lewis – were recognized April 28 in an emotional Vietnam Veterans Commemoration program hosted by Army Materiel Command. AMC is a commemorative partner of the U.S. Vietnam War Commemoration program, which honors all U.S. veterans who served on active duty between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of whether they served in-country, in-theater or stationed elsewhere during the Vietnam War. The national commemoration honors the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War through various community events recognizing Vietnam veterans and their families. There are more than 6 million Vietnam veterans.

Building on a strong foundation MASERU-ONCE in a while, Palo Kotelo packs his bags and takes a drive to Mohale’s Hoek, his rural home. There, he connects with his people and nature. It’s here that his journey started in 1947 when he was born into a polygamous family that worked hard to send him and his siblings to school. Now 73, Kotelo still has fond memories of his childhood and the lessons from his father, mother and other elders in the family are still with him.
