It’s been said that William Holmes McGuffey’s Eclectic Readers have been used by more Americans than any book besides The Bible and Webster’s Dictionary.
Those educational books taught American schoolchildren for more than a century from 1836 until the mid- 20th century. McGuffey (1800-1873) got his education in the Mahoning Valley, growing up in Coitsville and teaching briefly in Poland before becoming a professor at Miami University and president at Cincinnati College (now the University of Cincinnati) and Ohio University.
The William Holmes McGuffey Historical Society continues to work to make sure his legacy is remembered in the Mahoning Valley. The local chapter celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2021, and it is the last remaining chapter of an organization that once had 100,000 members belonging to chapters nationwide.

YOUNGSTOWN Former teacher Geraldine DeWitt, 62, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for assaulting a special needs student at McGuffey Elementary School in April 2019.
Youngstown Municipal Court Judge Renee DiSalvo issued the sentence Thursday.
DeWitt must report to jail March 4 unless she can provide a report from her doctor indicating a need for her jail time to be postponed until after she gets the COVID-19 vaccine.
Her attorney, Ronald Yarwood, argued that because of DeWitt’s age, health and having not yet gotten a COVID-19 vaccine, going to jail now could “become something much more permanent than a jail sentence.”

YOUNGSTOWN Teachers and administrators at McGuffey Elementary School are “Painting the Town McGuffey” to recognize scholars’ academic and attendance achievements.
McGuffey staff picked up signs and have posted them in the yards of students who made the school’s honor roll and those who achieved high attendance.
“We wanted to ‘Paint the Town McGuffey’ because we want our scholars to know that we are proud of them even at a distance and that we celebrate their achievements,” Eboni Williams, McGuffey’s fifth- through eighth-grade principal, said. “We also want the community to know the awesome scholars we have here at McGuffey.”
