An officer from Portage la Prairie is set to appear in court following a string of charges.
On November 4 at 10:19 a.m. RCMP officers were called to Oxford Common Street in Portage la Prairie. Officers responding to the call located an off-duty Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer whom they believed to be involved in an alleged assault.
RCMP officers arrested the suspect, bringing him to the RCMP detachment. After investigating, officers brought the matter to the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) the next day, triggering an investigation.
After investigating, IIU s Civilian Director Zane Tessler determined there are reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred. Tessler is authorizing the suspect to be charged with assault, mischief and breach of undertaking under sections, 266, 430(4) and 145(4)(a) of the Criminal Code.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba announced Tuesday the officer was also charged with mischief and breach of undertaking under the Criminal Code of Canada, after an investigation that began Nov. 5, 2020.
The IIU laid the charges, saying its civilian director was satisfied there were reasonable grounds a criminal offence had occurred.
No further information was released. In November, the IIU reported an off-duty MFNPS officer had been arrested after Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to an assault call in that community.
WINNIPEG RCMP have charged one man in connection with the homicide of a woman whose remains were found near Portage la Prairie last year. During a news conference on Thursday, Supt. Michael Koppang with the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit announced Ryan Peters, 37, has been charged with second-degree murder and accessory after the fact in connection with the death of Tamara Benoit (Norman) in 2020. Peters, who is from Long Plain First Nation, remains in custody. The charge has not been proven in court. “Ryan was known to Tamara, and this was not a random act of violence,” Koppang said, though he added due to the case being before the courts, he could not speak about the motive.
