Mount Meron and Metaphysics

Mount Meron and Metaphysics Metaphysics are an easy way for the Haredi world to avoid coming to terms with its own shortcomings. Avigdor Hayut, who was hurt in the deadly stampede at Mount Meron sits in a wheel chair near his son Shmuel Hayut, who was also hurt at the stampede and his wife as his father is speaking at the funeral of his son Yedidia Hayut. (Photo by Amir Levy/Getty Images) Metaphysics, or abstract theory beyond human rationality, is the last refuge for religious reactionaries. It is, by definition, impossible to argue with them on a rational basis. That is why no argument can convince the vast majority of Haredim, and most certainly their leaders, that the tragedy that led to the death of 45 people and the injuries of hundreds at Mt. Meron was entirely avoidable.

Of all those many years, over just one hundred years, the mitzvah of counting the Omer has been radically altered twice. This altering has been so serious; we often forget what the original form of the Omer days looked like and why they have changed. Many of these changes have remained a secret for generations, often to be discovered centuries later.

The idolatry of a big lie

March 5, 2021 Parashat Ki Tissa might be the most powerful portion in the Torah. Bene Yisrael just stood together at Mt. Sinai with one mind and one heart. They received the Torah and declared, “All that Hashem commands us, we will do and we will understand!” They were overwhelmed with awe by God’s presence and pleaded with Moshe to approach God on their behalf. God had also started to instruct Moshe in the construction of the Mishkan, the sacred structure that would enable Israel’s camp to be organized around God’s presence. The Mishkan would also ensure that God’s voice would continue to resonate with the people in the continuous transmission of revelation as they traveled life’s journey towards the promised land.
