I can say for sure that the pandemic has accelerated the growth of digital economy in Malaysia. Things have changed drastically on a daily and, sometimes, on an hourly basis, he said in his keynote address at the opening of the inaugural Asean Digital Ministers Meeting (ADGMIN1) held here on Thursday (Jan 21).
In this backdrop, he said the government has identified the digital economy as one of the key economic growth areas.
“We will drive forward the promise of shared prosperity for all, by focusing on empowering Malaysians with digital skills, enabling digitally-powered businesses and driving digital investments,” he said.
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean needs new laws to tackle transboundary cyberthreats in order to develop the region into a digital economic bloc, says Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said there are areas under present laws which need to be reviewed to accommodate new technologies and challenges, especially in the area of security in cyberspace.
“We must be mindful that cyberthreats are rapidly changing and encroaching into every sphere of our lives, including how we communicate, how we work, how we conduct online transactions, how we carry out purchases and even how we defend our national security.
“They have also become more sophisticated, complicated and transboundary in nature.

Kuala Lumpur: The transition of an Internet economy towards a fully developed digital society among Asean member countries depend largely on two factors including the extent of the interconnection of networks in each state, according to the director and chief operating officer of a local e-hailing app, Gojo.
Pradeep Kumar said the transition, which poses a challenge to Asean member states, also largely depends on the breadth of interoperability of network platforms in each member state.
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 19 (Bernama): Asean countries are well-placed and well prepared to accelerate the growth of the digital economy besides having the good political will and well-designed master plan for digitalisation in the future, said Vietnam s ambassador to Malaysia Dr Tran Viet Thai.
He said Asean members have a good vision and a good number of online population besides a fairly developed Information Technology (IT) infrastructure to accelerate the growth of the digital economy.
