New York City is one step closer to welcoming an unusual new landmark: an Olympic-length public pool floating in the East River.
After more than 10 years of crowdfunding, testing and campaigning, the project s designers say city authorities have now given them a green light to proceed with the plan.
The proposal, dubbed + Pool, will see a 285,500-gallon public pool built on a floating island. Layers of filtration membranes will make the water safe for swimming while simultaneously cleaning the surrounding river, according to project organizers, who say the pool will clean 600,000 gallons of river water every day.
A floating swimming pool for New York s East River designed by PlayLab has been approved by city planners ten years after it was first proposed.
Non-profit organiser +Pool has received an official confirmation to proceed with due diligence from New York s Economic Development Corporation and can go ahead with logistics planning.
A provisional site for the project, which will clean the river water without chemicals and will include a lap pool and an area for children, has been assigned to the north of Manhattan Bridge. Completion is expected within two years.

Wine Spectator’s Best of Award of Excellence, opened Iris April 21 in Midtown Manhattan. The restaurant offers Aegean-style dining, influenced by Turkish cuisine and Fraser’s Greek background, with an emphasis on plant-based dishes.
“This restaurant is such a direct expression of my heritage and passion, as seen through the lenses of cuisine and travel,” Fraser told
Wine Spectator.
Leading the wine program is the group’s beverage director, Amy Racine, who also oversees 701West’s 650-selection list. Iris features about 180 labels highlighting regions along the Aegean Sea, with Greek and Turkish bottles making up about half the selections. There is a diverse selection of sparkling wines as well, plus picks from Napa, Piedmont, Burgundy, the Rhône Valley and beyond. “It was a privilege and very fun to explore these new varietals, to introduce our guests to something new,” Racine said. “We really wanted a ‘If you like Sance
