Queensland Covid outbreak continues to grow as 19 new cases announced

Queensland's top doctor has bizarrely called for locked-down residents to not even order online shopping for the rest of the week.  Chief health officer Jeannette Young told locals to ask themselves if they 'really needed' to open their front door or go to the supermarket, or buy furniture online. Queensland recorded 16 new local Covid cases on Wednesday including a mystery case in Cairns that has a different, unknown source to the main outbreak in Brisbane 1,600km away. The Delta strain outbreak that began last week now has 100 cases in the state, more than at any time since Australia's first Covid wave early last year.

Miracle find 30 years after tragic accident

Former state member for Cairns and current division 2 councillor Rob Pyne. Offbeat by Jack Lawrie Premium Content Subscriber only A well-known Cairns political figure has had a personal item returned in amazing circumstances 30 years after he lost it during an accident that put him in a wheelchair. Former state member for Cairns and current division 2 councillor Rob Pyne shared the discovery of his missing wallet this evening. According to Mr Pyne, Yorkeys Knob Boating Club reached out to him after a worker discovered it near the boat ramp, where they'd been building a new toilet block. "It's pretty amazing. It just shows why we should look after the marine environment - the stuff that's out there hangs around," he said.

Councillor thanks the man who dug up 30-year-old memento

News by Jack Lawrie Premium Content Subscriber only A CAIRNS politician has had a chance to meet with the young tradie who discovered a relic from an accident that changed his life 30 years ago. On Thursday, former Cairns MP and division two councillor Rob Pyne revealed that his old wallet, lost 30 years ago during the diving accident that rendered him quadriplegic, had been found washed up near the Yorkeys Knob boat ramp. Mr Pyne had set off on a boating trip with his fiancee and in-laws and dived into the water, when he hit a sandbar and broke his neck.
