The Yukon-Kuskokwim Fitness Center plans to open to 40% capacity on May 3. Facility Director Stacey Reardon says recreational areas of the fitness center will be open only to those who have been vaccinated, but the pool and family locker room will be open to unvaccinated individuals with reservations. The pool is one of the only areas of the fitness center where people don’t wear masks.
Reardon says that the facility is reopening to unvaccinated individuals because the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta has maintained a relatively stable COVID-19 case rate for two weeks now, coupled with high rates of vaccination. This downgrades the region from being at “high” risk of widespread transmission to “moderate” risk. The criteria for case transmission is based on a formula written by the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation. That formula is the result of a number of factors, like overall case rate and number of people vaccinated.

According to the AP, over a third of Kongiganak residents have contracted the Wuhan coronavirus and two have died from (or with) it. But it is unclear how many of those who supposedly contracted the virus had symptoms or if they were severe.
Sheila Phillip, the Kongiganak Traditional Council secretary, said, “people who are fully vaccinated can go inside the village’s two stores if they wear masks and follow social distancing guidelines.”
People who have not received experimental coronavirus shots, however, “can still make phone orders and their orders are delivered to their home,” Phillip said.

Stacey Reardon: We will be open beginning March 1 for adults who have been fully vaccinated. So that means that they ve got both doses of their vaccine, and that second dose has been at least two weeks ago. So for instance, if you want to come in on Monday, Mar. 1, your second dose of your vaccine should have been on or before Feb. 15.
KYUK: How are you checking to ensure that people have been vaccinated?
Reardon: So at check in, everybody needs to show their CDC vaccination card and a photo ID.
KYUK: Since only fully vaccinated people are allowed into the facility, does that mean no one under age 16?

The first mushers have arrived at the halfway checkpoint for the 2021 Kuskokwim 300 Sled Dog Race. The top three mushers arrived within one hour of each other.
2021 Bogus Creek 150 Champion Richie Diehl from Aniak is riding the momentum from his win two weeks ago. He arrived first to the halfway checkpoint at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Fitness Center in Bethel at 9:35 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13 with 12 dogs. He was trailed by Nicholas Petit from Girdwood who arrived 28 minutes after Diehl at 10:03 a.m., with 12 dogs. Petit had broken into an early lead at the beginning of the race, but Diehl caught up and passed him shortly before midnight.
