Somerton High School Funding Approved By Governor, YUHSD Says

YUHSD Yuma Union High School District officials announced Wednesday that Somerton High School will receive $16.52 million in funding each year for fiscal years 2022 and 2023 based on the Arizona Legislature’s General Appropriations Act, which was signed into law by Gov. Doug Ducey. YUHSD officials said the funding will accelerate construction on the new high school, which has been in the planning and development stages for the past half decade. A groundbreaking ceremony is expected to take place in the fall. In a released statement, Somerton Mayor Jerry Anaya said “Established in 1898, Somerton has grown to be the best little city in Arizona, and it s only getting better. Our community has been anxiously waiting for this high school. As a lifetime Somerton resident, it is an honor to serve as Mayor and I’m proud to see my community prosper. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with YUHSD to make this project a success.”

No budget passed following division on portions of funding YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) - The speaker and president of the Arizona House of Representatives have decided to adjourn until June 10th. That means, no budget has been passed. Everything is up in the air with the $12.8 billion budget being drafted up by state congressional members. Republican lawmakers are divided on portions of it including a state tax cut that would eliminate the state’s graduated income tax rate and replace it with a flat 2.5%. Thats a cut of more than 25% of all income tax revenue. Supporters like Republican Rep. Tim Dunn tells us, “the state income flat tax is a historical chance for arizona tax revision  to keep the tax payers money in their pocket. I am working on a hold harmless provision to make sure this does not have an impact on the City of Yuma.
