New 3D-Printable Hydrogel Changes Shape, Color in Response to Light

New 3D-Printable Hydrogel Changes Shape, Color in Response to Light Written by AZoMJan 6 2021 Engineers from Rutgers University took cues from the color-changing skin of squids, octopuses and cuttlefish to develop a 3D-printed smart gel that alters its shape upon exposure to light, turns into an artificial muscle,  and may pave the way for new military camouflage, flexible displays and soft robotics. This octopus has color-changing cells, called chromatophores, in its skin, a phenomenon that inspired Rutgers engineers. Image Credit: NOAA Okeanos Explorer Program, Galapagos Rift Expedition 2011. Additionally, the team has designed a 3D-printed stretchy material that can disclose colors upon changes in light, reports their study published in the

COVID-19 has hit commercial fishing hard

With restaurants and supply chains disrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, two-fifths of commercial fishers from Maine to North Carolina did not go fishing earlier this year, a new study shows. Of those who kept fishing, nearly all reported a decline in income compared with previous years, according to the study in The study, which covers March to June and included 258 fishers, also examined data on fish landings and found that the catch for some species, such as squid and scallops, decreased compared with previous years. The catch for other species, such as black sea bass and haddock, was on par with or higher than previous years, suggesting that many fishermen fished as much as they had been before the pandemic, while earning less income.

Antibiotics for C-sections effective after umbilical cord clamped

E-Mail IMAGE: Trillions of microorganisms make up the human microbiome, which may hold the key to improving health. view more  Credit: NIH Antibiotics for cesarean section births are just as effective when they re given after the umbilical cord is clamped as before clamping - the current practice - and could benefit newborns developing microbiomes, according to Rutgers co-authored research. The study, by far the largest of its kind and published in the journal Antimicrobial Resistance & Infection Control, challenges current recommendations for antibiotic use. Administering antibiotics after clamping does not increase the risk of infection at the site of C-section incisions, the study concludes.
