16-Year-Old Student Charged After Gun Found At Tennessee High School

By Sarah Tate May 26, 2021 A Middle Tennessee student was arrested after a handgun was reported at a Rutherford County school, sending the campus into lockdown. According to News Channel 5, the 16-year-old student is facing charges after the weapon was found in his backpack at Stewarts Creek High School in Smyrna Tuesday morning (May 25). When a school resource officer received a report that a student potentially had a gun on campus, administrators placed the school on lockdown. Three SROs quickly detained two students during the course of the investigation, but only one was ultimately arrested. While the student was not publicly identified, the Rutherford County Sheriff s Office said SROs were familiar with the student.

School Resource Officer Matt Clagg charged the teen with possession of a weapon on campus and simple possession of marijuana after school resource officers found the items inside his backpack. SRO Lt. Alan Garner said administrators received information about the handgun, placed the school on lockdown and notified the SROs.  Within minutes, Clagg, SRO Shane Vaughn, and Stewarts Creek Middle SRO Chris Freischlag took the student into custody.

The grant process began with the state accepting 61 applications for the program in March. TDOE Chief of Programs Jean Luna said there was so much interest in the program she asked to expand it from the more than $14 million originally set aside. “The traditional model doesn’t fit for every student, so the idea of the innovative high school is to meet lots of different needs,” Luna said, adding that the ideas came from feedback from employers, schools and students. “It’s to give some of those kids jumpstarts into postseco

The grants are intended to foster local community partnerships that boost student readiness and prepare high schoolers for jobs and careers in their local communities.    The goal of the Innovative High School Models program is to encourage strong, strategic and innovative partnerships between Tennessee public school districts, postsecondary education institutions and local employers to reimagine how to prepare students for success after high school, officials said.
