Motoring: New labelling for tyres seeks to highlight efficiency and performance Date published: 01 May 2021
According to a survey, just 1% of tyres in the market are ‘A’ rated for both efficiency and wet grip
As from today (Saturday, May 1), motorists will benefit from the introduction of a new label and innovative system to help them understand how well tyres perform, especially for fuel efficiency and grip in the wet.
This follows concerns that vehicle owners are not aware of the significant differences between the highest and lowest rated tyres displayed on the outgoing label.
According to a survey of the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association and Lizeo Group, just 1% of tyres in the market are ‘A’ rated for both efficiency and wet grip.

HANOVER, Germany Continental A.G. has extended Christian Koetz s status as executive board member in charge of Conti s tire business and purchasing operations by five years until April 2027.
Mr. Koetz was promoted to his current positions on Conti s executive board in March 2019, succeeding Nikolai Setzer, who was named then as the spokesman for the then-newly created automotive board.
Under his leadership, Continental expects the tire business to remain an important source of value and a guarantor of stability for the entire group, according to CEO Nikolai Setzer, who noted Mr. Koetz has played a pivotal role in recent years in the promotion of new technologies, particularly digital tire solutions and the implementation of sustainability objectives.
The new tyre labelling system explained

Tyres are arguably the most important aspect of your car, as they’re the only things connecting you with the road.
However, according to a survey by the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association, just one per cent of tyres on sale have the highest rating for both efficiency and wet grip.
Although there could be many reasons why low numbers of high-performing tyres are being sold, it’s perhaps no surprise that tyre labelling is getting an overhaul.

Road safety charity TyreSafe explains that these labels are designed to give consumers information about the quality of the tyre, with ratings for fuel efficiency, braking performance in the wet and tyre noise.
