Ex-Sub Inspector of police sentenced to three-years imprisonment in graft case BSS, Dhaka BSS, Dhaka A Dhaka court today sentenced a former sub-inspector of Sirajganj Sadar Police Station to three-years in prison, in a case filed for giving false information on wealth statement. Judge Iqbal Hossain of Dhaka Fifth Special Judge s Court gave the verdict in the presence of former SI Abdul Jalil. He was later sent to jail with a conviction warrant. The court sentenced Jalil to three-years of imprisonment under section 26 (2) and another three-years under section 27 (1) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act. The two jail terms will run concurrently, meaning the convict has to suffer only three years behind bars.

The two other accused are: British journalist David Bergman and Mostefa Souag, acting director general of Al Jazeera Media Network. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Shahidul Islam passed the order as Moshiur Malek, founder and president of Bangabandhu Foundation, also the complainant of the case, was not empowered by the government to file the lawsuit, Atiqur Rahman, bench assistant of the court, told The Daily Star.

After holding hearing, the magistrate recorded the statement of the complainant and took cognisance of the case. The magistrate will pass an order in the case on February 22, court sources said. In the complaint, Malek said Al Jazeera on February 1 aired a report which was also published on YouTube and online newspapers. The report was fictitious, false, fake and fabricated. By broadcasting the report, Al Jazeera tarnished the image of the government and the state at home and abroad which is tantamount to sedition, the complainant added. In his statement to the court, Malek said the accused were conspiring to topple the country s elected government through this report.

File photo ISLAMABAD: The court hearing a case relating to an accident involving former MNA Kashmala Tariq s son has asked police to verify his driving license, according to Geo News.  Tariq s son, who is the Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace, was involved in a traffic accident on February 2. An interim bail hearing of Azlan Shah, Kashmala s son, was held by the District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Sohail. The suspect s lawyer told the court that they had reached an agreement with the relatives of three of the four people killed in the accident.
