Over 100,000 flee to Niger Republic after B/Haram attacks Borno town

Women, children in distress – Legislators No fewer than 100, 000 people from Damasak town in Borno State fled to the neighbouring Niger Republic on Wednesday following multiple attacks by Boko Haram fighters. Government sources said at least 10 people were killed yesterday, many wounded and thousands of others wandering in the bush. It was also learnt that hundreds of houses of the civilian population, their shops and government buildings including police divisional headquarters have been burnt to ashes by the invaders. Yesterday’s attack on Damasak, headquarters of Mobbar LGA made it the sixth time in the last two weeks; and in the last four days, Nigerian ground troops supported by the air component have been battling for the control of the agrarian community.

Many northerners in the South-East are also living in fear after many of them have been killed and their property worth millions of naira destroyed. Security experts including those who keep track of attacks said in the five states in the zone – Abia, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu and Imo,  more than 40 attacks have been launched  in 2021 alone in the emerging trend of onslaught on security personnel and wanton destruction of security facilities and operational assets. If neighbouring states in the South South, especially Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Cross River, are added, the number of attacks is more than 60, leaving not less than 50 security personnel killed.

Stop attacks on security formations now

Force spokesperson, Frank Mba, said “preliminary investigations revealed that the attackers, who came in their numbers with sophisticated weapons such as General Purpose Machine Guns, Sub-Machine Guns, AK49 rifles, Rocket Propelled Grenades, Improvised Explosive Devices, are members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB)/Eastern Security Network (ESN).” President Muhammadu Buhari condemned the attacks, calling them “act of terrorism.” Buhari, in a statement by his spokesperson, Garba Shehu, directed security and intelligence agencies in the state and the geo-political zone to fully mobilize and go after the “terrorists, apprehend them and get them punished under the full weight of the law.”
