A petition calling for mandatory minimum actual time in custody sentences for motorists convicted of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death, following a fatal crash which killed four-year-old Taylen Swanson, continues to gain attention with more than 3400 signatures.
The petition was started by Taylen’s aunt Jody Swanson following the sentencing of at-fault driver Michelle Lee Newton in Rockhampton District Court on March 19 to 3.5 years prison, wholly suspended and operational for five years for one count of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death and grievous bodily harm, along with one count each of drug driving while being a provisional licence holder and possessing a dangerous drug.

The child victim was found wandering the streets of Moura, intoxicated, telling police she had been kidnapped, thrown in the boot of a car and driven for hours before being raped and left in the middle of the street. When later sober, she told police the factual version of events. Harold John White, 21, pleaded guilty in Rockhampton District Court on April 29 to two counts of indecent treatment of a child under 16.

Subscriber only A Rockhampton ice addict with a lengthy criminal history was found in a swanky Brisbane hotel room last year with a veritable pharmacy for sale, which included eight different drugs, as well as cash and drug utensils, a court has heard. Park Avenue man Duane Everett Warcon, 30, faced Brisbane Supreme Court on Friday, April 9, and pleaded guilty to eight offences, including possessing more than 7g of methamphetamine, relating to a police raid of a hotel room in Oaks Brisbane on Felix Suites on June 1 last year. Police went to the hotel room after being given the key by another offender apprehended in a different matter.
