‘Open dedicated wards for abandoned patients’

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Wednesday ordered notice to the State on a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the government to establish special wards for treating abandoned and destitute people at all government medical college hospitals and district headquarters hospitals.
In her petitioner, M. Nithya Sowmya of Tiruchi pointed out that such wards had been set up at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai and Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai. Similar special wards for the abandoned should be established at government hospitals across the State, she said.

Tamil Nadu reported 508 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday, taking the total figure to 8,38,340. It also reported six deaths, taking the toll to 12,356.

Chennai reported 141 fresh cases, followed by Coimbatore with 53. These were the only two districts with more than 50 cases. Thirteen other districts reported cases in double digits, while 21 districts reported cases in single digits. Tirupathur was the only district that did not report any fresh case, according to an official bulletin.
Ten specialist doctors were involved in the challenging surgery which lasted for 12 hours.

CHENNAI: The doctors of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) have successfully performed ‘David’s procedure’, an advanced heart surgery named after a Brazilian cardiac surgeon Tyrone E David, who first did it.
The procedure involves valve-sparing aortic root replacement method, a surgical treatment for aortic root aneurysms (a ballooning and weakened area in the artery).
According to a statement from the hospital, 42-year-old Saraswathi, hailing from Erode, was diagnosed with ascending aortic aneurysm with severe aortic regurgitation (a condition where leakage of pumped out blood back into the heart occurs).

Tamil Nadu reported 505 new cases of COVID-19 and five deaths on Saturday, taking the State’s tally to 8,37,832 and toll to 12,350.
Ariyalur, Perambalur and Ramanathapuram reported no new case. A total of 145 persons tested positive in Chennai, followed by 48 in Coimbatore and 46 in Chengalpattu. There were 23 cases in Tiruvallur, 21 in Erode and 20 each in Salem and Tiruppur. The remaining districts saw under 20 cases each. Those testing positive included two returnees from Kerala.
