Ranchi (Jharkhand) [India], May 23 (ANI): Following the suit of several states, the Jharkhand government is too planning to declare Mucormycosis or black fungus as an epidemic in the state.
Looking at the severity of the disease, Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta will propose to declare black fungus as an epidemic in the Cabinet meeting scheduled to be held on Monday.
The state government has already started taking precautionary measures including setting up the dedicated black fungus wards in every district. We are seriously concerned about black fungus and taking all necessary steps. We are setting up special black fungus wards in districts. Defunct ventilators from PM-CARES Fund, coupled with lack of adherence to installation protocols and training to technicians, are giving doctors at the Covid ICU of Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) a tough time, doctors looking after critical patients in Jharkhand’s largest state-run hospital said.
A senior doctor of the hospital even drafted an email to the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday, highlighting the challenges and difficulties they were faced with.
“Some of the ventilators just stop functioning abruptly, while some have technical glitches that lead to sudden drop in oxygen level. This is quite risky as patients may die of a technical snag in the machines,” said a senior doctor on duty at the Covid ICU, requesting anonymity as he feared he could be singled out and made to bear the brunt of a political attack.

Jharkhand government has asked all leading hospitals in the state to set up post-Covid care centres and strengthen existing facilities for rehabilitation of Covid survivors following a rise in cases of Covid-induced mucormycosis and fatalities caused by residual symptoms.
In a letter addressed to all five state-run hospitals and a few corporate-run hospitals in Jamshedpur and Bokaro on Saturday, the Hemant Soren-led Government has said that in accordance with recommendations of the Expert Committee of Covid-19 Management in Jharkhand, all hospitals were directed to set up post-Covid care facilities for management, treatment and counselling of Covid survivors without further ado.
