Ashley Lynn Priore: A chess strategy may help unify Pa

I was born and raised in the Steel City and attended the University of Pittsburgh down the street from my home. In 2014, I founded a nonprofit organization, Queen’s Gambit Chess Institute. I have taught chess in Pittsburgh’s nine districts ever since. I’ve lived here since 1999, and I thought I knew everything I needed to be an educated citizen. I was wrong. It wasn’t until earlier this summer when I spoke to leaders from four states. They challenged me to describe some of Pennsylvania’s common issues (to compare and contrast how each state differs on nationwide concerns).

December 15, 2020 PHOTO: PHIL BRAY | NETFLIX If you’re one of the millions of people who watched “The Queen’s Gambit” on Netflix and now want to play chess like fictional Beth Harmon, then check out these Pittsburgh-based organizations. Before the shutdown, the Pittsburgh Chess Club was open during the week at its location in Squirrel Hill. The club isn’t meeting right now because of COVID restrictions and plans to move to a different location soon. Right now they have virtual competitions. Membership has a small fee but is currently in a “pay what you want” format, due to the pandemic. The non-profit traces its roots to the mid-1800s and offers classes, lectures, exhibitions and chess tournaments.
