Latvia to buy new medicine for Covid-19 treatment

(LTV Ziņu dienesta korespondente) Latvia will purchase a new effective but expensive drug for the treatment of severely ill Covid-19 patients, Latvian Television reported July 24. The medicine is a monoclonal antibody preparation “REGN COV2”. This drug is very expensive. More than EUR 200 000 has been earmarked for its purchase to provide it to around 100 severely ill patients. The medicine would not be used as a common treatment of the infection, it would be prescribed by doctors only for special cases when there is a high risk to life or serious side effects of the illness. The new medicinal products are currently being evaluated in an accelerated manner by the European Medicines Agency.

Unusually high number of Lyme-infected ticks this year

(LTV Ziņu dienesta korespondente) Each fifth tick, which has been investigated in the laboratory of the Latvian Infectology Centre, contains borrelia or the initiator of Lyme disease, Latvian Television reported July 14. Only 2% of the ticks tested were infected with tick encephalitis. It doesn t mean that everyone who gets these ticks inevitably gets sick. But medics remind the public to be careful outdoors and take suitable precautions when in areas potentially containing ticks. 727 ticks have been removed by July 11 at Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS). Not all removed ticks are analyzed as it is a paid-for service. Tick encephalitis is an acute central nervous system disease. The most serious cases end up with death or disability, and may also include headache, fatigue, trouble balancing or other consequences.
