Indie film on ice

click to enlarge Last March, Jeremy Sklar’s first feature film, Tom of Your Life, made its festival debut at San Jose’s Cinequest at a prime-time Friday night, cursed. As COVID-19 shut down California, the comedy-fantasy-drama premiered in front of an audience of 12, Sklar’s two brothers included; the rest of the fest was canceled entirely. Sklar, who’s in his early 50s and goes by Jer, spent a few days visiting family out west, then returned home to Logan Square where, holed up in his apartment, he watched a lot of Law & Order and furiously brainstormed ways to promote his film despite the pandemic lockdown. The movie was having some success streaming (it’s available on Amazon Prime and Apple TV as well as through other major outlets) when in September it got a break:

Was Don Kessinger the best Ole Miss athlete ever? So glad you asked

By Rick Cleveland Apr 21, 2021 5:40 PM Don Kessinger batted .400 for his Ole Miss career, but he was even better known for his fielding ability. (Ole Miss athletics) Greatest athlete in Ole Miss history? My guess in 99% of Rebels would blurt “Archie Manning” before the question is completed. Hard to argue: Manning was an All American quarterback and also an outstanding shortstop in baseball. And then there’s Jake Gibbs, also an All American quarterback so gifted in baseball the New York Yankees paid him $100,000 to sign to play baseball instead of football. That was back when Mickey Mantle was the highest paid player in baseball at a salary of 100 grand.

Dogs back in catbird s seat with thrilling 7-5 Sunday win

By Rick Cleveland Apr 18, 2021 6:09 PM Tanner Allen celebrates his bases-clearing triple that gave State the lead for good in Sunday’s 7-5 victory over Ole Miss. (MSU Athletics) STARKVILLE — Fewer than 24 hours after being drubbed 9-0 by arch-rival Ole Miss, Mississippi State Sunday climbed back into what Mississippi native and broadcasting legend Red Barber famously called “the catbird’s seat.” What that means is on top, which is where the Bulldogs are currently in their long-time rivalry with Ole Miss. The Bulldogs won a hard-fought 7-5 victory by virtue of a five-run sixth inning when State greeted three different Ole Miss relievers with six hits in seven at bats.
