Cork South-Central: 4 seats
Taoiseach Micheál Martin is a youthful 60 but, if he stands down as Fianna Fáil leader during this term, then attention turns to whether he runs again. There’s no shortage of family members to fill his boots but passing the seat won’t be easy. Fianna Fáil Finance Minister Michael McGrath will be strong again. Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin have a guaranteed seat, so the second Fianna Fáil seat is the only question. Sinn Féin’s Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire will have a running mate in Carrigaline. Fine Gael’s Simon Coveney will have to manage the vote vastly better to bring in Senator Jerry Buttimer.
Speaking to
Independent.ie, Richard Donoghue TD said he had “no regrets” about providing the character reference for Phelim O’Reilly (22), and said the incident was “completely out of character”.
“What he done 100pc was wrong. Is it out of character for him? 100pc. So that tells me, why did it happen? he said, adding “it was totally out of character for the Phelim I know to do any such things”.
At Ennis Circuit Court on Friday, Judge Brian O’Callaghan imposed a two-year suspended prison term on O’Reilly (22) of Steals, Kilmallock and ordered him to pay €15,000 compensation for the assault causing harm of David Hannigan on October 26, 2019 at Main Street, Lahinch.
For farmers to “achieve only a breakeven scenario”, the government must intervene to stop the “cartel-like” system that “exists within the meat factory industry”, independent TD Richard O’Donoghue has claimed.
The Limerick TD expressed concern that the current beef cattle price offered by meat factories of around €3.75 per KG is well below Teagasc’s own suggested breakeven figure of €4.50/kg.
Commenting on the matter, deputy O’Donoghue said:
“Farmers are using a percentage of the single farm payment for subsidising the production of cattle so that they can stay in business and not as an income for their family.
