EASTON, Md. – Easton Police say a man is behind bars after he allegedly killed a man and stole his vehicle on Tuesday.
At around 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, officers were called to the 100 block of Tred Avon Avenue in reference to a welfare check. On arrival, they found an open door to the rear of the residence, and found 91-year-old Richard Brunkhorst dead inside. An initial investigation revealed that Brunkhorst had injuries consistent with an altercation.
It was also discovered that Brunkhorst’s vehicle had been stolen.
At around 1 a.m. Wednesday, officers with the Maryland Transportation Authority located the vehicle on westbound Route 50 near exit 29 in Anne Arundel County and conducted a traffic stop. The driver, 46-year-old Charles Smullen was taken into custody, and firearms that were stolen from the residence were located in plain view inside the vehicle.
