The coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak is entering a precarious point in the road to normalcy, and Staten Island doctors are expressing concern mixed with cautious optimism as New York City loosens restrictions while ramping up vaccination efforts. “I’m a little bit concerned about us seeing the effects of Passover and Easter over the next two weeks,” said Dr. Theodore Maniatis, medical director of Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH). “It’s kind of a balance between how many people gathered inside without masks, and how many people are going outside and therefore getting out of the in-house environments.”

As of 1 p.m. Tuesday, 1,710 borough residents are believed to have died from complications related to the coronavirus, according to the most recent data available. The fatalities include 1,504 Staten Islanders with confirmed COVID-19 cases, up one from the figure reported on Monday.
