Long-time, well-known bagel destination Plaza Bagels fired up the ovens once again at 73 New Dorp Plaza. The beloved shop shut suddenly in early October. It’s redux comes courtesy of new owners, Alex Calasso of Bay Terrace and Mike Mahmood of South Beach. Both proprietors have done tours in New York City bagel operations but this is the partners’ first collaboration. Business partners Mike Mahmood, left, and Alex Calasso (Staten Island Advance/Pamela Silvestri) Mahmood is a familiar face on the Staten Island breakfast shop route. He came to Staten Island from Pakistan in 1992 and tended a store at Castleton Avenue and Broadway in West Brighton. He moved on to Get and Go Hot Bagels in Dongan Hills and Puttin’ on a Bagel in West Brighton, formerly by Richmond University Medical Center. He takes his recipes now to New Dorp.

For folks at the Advance/SILive.com, Monday was one of those days Mentoring Monday, to be more specific, a program where business professionals – all women – advise any woman looking for career advice on a Monday morning in February. This was the second year we sponsored the event. Last year, it was in-person and a runaway success. Then, about 125 showed up for advice from about 60 women who achieved success in their businesses.

Police arrested 18-year-old Prince Nesbitt-Hall, of New Jersey, who allegedly fled on foot after T-boning a Mercedes at Lamberts Lane and Elson Street in the Graniteville section around 6:20 p.m. Tuesday.
