Guest Opinion: Forgive us, children, for not fighting harder

By Megan Brock I will never forget the moment on March 13, 2020, when Gov. Tom Wolf announced the two-week closure of all Pennsylvania schools. I let out a visceral a cry of frustration at the unprecedented news.   It was a simpler time before the phrases “social distance” and “mask up” were embedded into the popular vernacular. Believing in the importance of a quality, face-to-face education was not only socially acceptable, it was unquestionable. Never could I have imagined, 11 months later, thousands of students across Pennsylvania would not have access to an in-person education.  The mission of the Pennsylvania Department of Education is, “…to ensure that every learner has access to a world-class education system that academically prepares children and adults to succeed as productive citizens.”

(Shutterstock) BUCKS COUNTY, PA Despite a series of winter storms that made travel difficult and forced postponements, Bucks County s three new COVID-19 vaccine clinics administered more than 1,700 doses to residents last week. As the vaccination effort ramped up, the county also saw a significant drop in the number of new coronavirus cases. State figures showed 1,010 new cases in Bucks County from Feb. 14-20 a 32-percent decrease from the previous week. We continue to see cases dropping and vaccination numbers going up. It s a winning trend for long-term control of the outbreak, said Dr. David Damsker, director of the Bucks County Health Department. Even if the vaccine supply isn t as good as we want it to be, every person that is immunized brings us closer to our goals.

Replies(9) UPDATED 2:10 p.m., Friday, Feb. 19. BUCKS COUNTY, PA Three public COVID-19 vaccination clinics have now opened in Bucks County, marking a key advance in the county s effort to give vaccinations for the virus to the general public. But local health officials continued to voice frustration at the amount of the vaccine they have received, saying they expect bigger shipments to start arriving, but not for at least a couple of weeks. Subscribe Dr. David Damsker this week said he doesn t expect a significant increase in the county s vaccine supply until March. But Alison Beam, Pennsylvania s acting secretary of health, said that the state will start sending larger amounts of vaccine to providers who are able to immunize people most quickly namely county health departments and larger hospitals.
