(Photo: Getty Images/Instagram) Will Smith is receiving praise after posting a photo of his bare-chested body on Instagram while admitting to being in the “worst shape of my life.” But after revealing his motivation behind the seemingly body positive post, with an announcement that he’s embarking upon a weight-loss journey to be documented on YouTube, it’s a wonder that Smith is being celebrated for “representing us with the Dad bods,” as it’s his temporary and evidently undesired state.

While GH also publishes weight loss content and endeavors to do so in a responsible, science-backed way, we think it’s important to present a broad perspective that allows for a fuller understanding of the complex thinking about health and body weight. Our goal here is not to tell you how to think, eat, or live nor is to to pass judgment on how you choose to nourish your body but rather to start a conversation about diet culture, its impact, and how we might challenge the messages we are given about what makes us attractive, successful, and healthy.

Activist Virgie Tovar talks body positivity and diet culture

Body image activist Virgie Tovar spoke to the importance of an intersectional approach to health and weight discrimination in a guest lecture Thursday. In an event organized by NU College Feminists a part of the University’s Body Acceptance Week, Tovar, an expert on weight-based discrimination, discussed the impact of fatphobia on diet culture and body image. Tovar first defined fatphobia in a modern context, describing how its origins can be traced to slavery and colonialism. She went on to discuss how the world’s current fixation on diet culture and weight loss negatively impacts people’s relationship with food, sharing personal anecdotes from her podcast, “Rebel Eaters Club.”
