In a press conference on Thursday, defence minister Pervez Khattak, flanked by interior minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and parliamentary affairs minister Ali Muhammad Khan, said all federal employees would be given ad hoc relief of 25 per cent, while the “issues of upgradation (promotions)” will be resolved after the budget. Khattak said there is a disparity between the salaries of different departments, which range from 100 to 200 per cent. “The ad hoc relief will be merged in the budget,” he said, adding that the Prime Minister spoke to two chief ministers and asked them to resolve salaries’ issue of provincial employees as per directions of the federal government.

The committee comprised Minister for Defence Pervez Khattak, Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Ali Muhammad Khan. As per the decision, a 25 percent increase in salaries of federal government employees from grades 1 to 19 was approved on ad-hoc basis. Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Pervez Khattak and Ali Muhammad Khan and the leaders of protesting employees Islam-ud-Din and Rehman Bajwa signed the agreement. Addressing a press conference here accompanied by Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Ali Muhammad Khan, Pervez Khattak said the ad-hoc relief of 25 percent would be added to the pay scales in the upcoming budget.

It added that the ad hoc relief could be made part of the basic salary in the next fiscal year. An agreement with protesters was reached after Wednesday’s fierce clashes between the employees and security forces in the federal capital. The employees had been protesting the increase in their wages.

The police resorted to baton charge and threw hundreds of teargas shells to disperse the agitating employees as tens of protesters were arrested and sent to lockups of different police stations. At least 30 protesting employees were taken into custody under Section 16 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance (MPO). The teargas shelling in the radius of 3 to 5 kilometre around the Constituted Avenue was so heavy that the people felt suffocation. All incoming roads including Islamabad Expressway and Motorway remained closed for hours. Islamabad Police fired extensive teargas at protesting government employees when they were heading towards the Parliament House.
