PERC to close for maintenance in April
ORRINGTON The Penobscot Energy Recovery Co. (PERC), which takes in much of the waste from Hancock County and surrounding counties and burns it to generate electricity, will be down for maintenance from April 5 through 25, said Plant Manager Henry Lang, as Versant Power works on the 115,000-volt lead line coming into the plant.
Although PERC can store roughly 10,000 tons of waste in its storage area and on its tipping floor, the rest of the deliveries will be landfilled at Juniper Ridge Landfill while PERC is closed, he said. Lang said waste can’t stay stored for long, however, “since the packed-in waste tends to self-combust if stored too long like wet hay.”

PLANS by the Re-Gen Group to develop a new £22 million recycling project in Newry will create 130 jobs and could be worth an additional £25m a year to the economy, the company has said.
The waste specialist has published its proposal for a new self-funded ‘circular economy resource park on an eight-acre site at the Invest NI Carnbane Business Park, close to the A1.
Re-Gen already employs around 250 people in the area with its core business involving the processing of mixed dry recyclable and residual waste from local authorities on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Brightly coloured plastic debris from the UK has been washing up along the coast of Maine in the US after a shipment bound for incineration fell into the sea.
The plastic debris, part of a 10,000-tonne consignment from Re-Gen Waste, a company based in Newry, Northern Ireland, has infuriated environmentalists and locals surprised to learn that the north-eastern state of Maine is importing plastic from almost 3,000 miles away.
Volunteers struggling to clear the waste from the shoreline of Sears Island, alongside a company employed to tackle it, fear they are fighting a losing battle as more plastic washes up with every tide.
