The Randolph County Public Health COVID vaccine clinic scheduled for Saturday at the North Carolina Zoo has been cancelled. According to the Randolph County Health Department, those who were scheduled for the event either attended the Randolph Health vaccine clinic held at the zoo last weekend or have been called to reschedule their appointment. Randolph County health officials said the Randolph County Public Health department only holds vaccine clinics by appointment only.

COVID-19 Update: 587 new cases in Randolph County over the past week Randolph County reported 587 new cases of COVID-19, totaling 12,095 confirmed cases and 190 deaths as of Monday, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Randolph County continues to be designated as a “red” county on the state’s County Alert System, the most critical tier for COVID-19 spread followed by orange and yellow for substantial and significant spread, respectively. The spread of COVID-19 has had a “high impact” on hospitals in the area. Statewide, the NC Department of Health and Human Services reported 799,279 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 2,339 people hospitalized, based on the reported numbers on Monday.

Local experts hope to bridge racial trust gap in vaccine rollout Times-News Local and national experts are touting the safety of the COVID-19 vaccine in the hopes of mitigating what they describe as mistrust among certain demographics, especially Blacks.  As authorities begin rolling out the COVID-19 vaccine to communities across the country, local experts are finding that individuals within certain communities, particularly Black Americans, have expressed misgivings about the government-supplied treatment. Experts fear this could become a significant obstacle to the minimal amounts of vaccination required to affect herd immunity.  Their fears are already playing out in states that include demographic information in their vaccination datasets. North Carolina is among the top five states with a large disparity between the vaccination rates of Black and white residents.
