Austin police ID 20-year-old pedestrian killed on Airport Blvd on Jan 9

Austin police on Wednesday identified a pedestrian killed earlier this month in city traffic as 21-year-old Connor Avery Hughes. A preliminary police investigation found that Hughes was struck by a blue Chevrolet Cruze as he tried to cross the middle of the 4000 block of Airport Boulevard just before 9:20 p.m. on Jan. 9. Austin-Travis County EMS medics took Hughes to Dell Seton Medical Center, where he died on Jan. 11. He had just turned 21 on Jan. 5. Police said the driver of the Cruze, who remained at the scene where Hughes was hit, showed no signs of impairment. Investigators do not think excessive speed was a factor, police said, and no criminal charges are expected.

Austin forecast for Wednesday: Storms, chilly winds with cold front

Wednesday forecast for Austin: Mother Nature isn t letting go of 2020 without one more round of stormy weather for us. The upshot is, the winds might sweep out all the cedar pollen our sinuses have been grappling with. We should get another day of warmer than normal temperatures before a strong cold front in the afternoon brings chilly northwest winds and thunderstorms, the National Weather Service says. Damaging wind gusts and hail are the main threats as the cold front is likely to generate severe weather near and east of the Interstate 35 corridor, forecasters say. Austin will see storms mainly after 1 p.m., but not before temperatures reach a high of 74 which is almost 15 degrees above normal. The surest sign of the cold front will be the replacement of warm south-southeast breezes with frigid north winds in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 20 mph.

COVID-19 restrictions in Austin: What does Stage 5 mean? What s closed?

Back in May, as the coronavirus pandemic appeared to be intensifying, Austin Public Health unveiled a five-stage chart that would not only provide instructions on how to stay safe but also indicate how much we needed to change life as we once knew it. It established threat levels for those at high risk of experiencing severe symptoms of COVID-19, the disease linked to the coronavirus. Those include people older than 65 or people with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, obesity, or those who are otherwise immuno-compromised. The chart does not specify which businesses should remain open or be shut down, but it does recommend customer capacity levels and business practices. Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive orders regarding the pandemic have allowed most businesses to remain open.
