Apex sues Pawtucket: Saga drags on in court alleging abuse of power

The owner of the little-used Apex department store complex is suing Pawtucket to block the city s attempts to seize the property and redevelop it. Lawyers for four entities calling themselves the Apex companies filed a complaint in U.S. District court last week to stop the systemic abuse of power by city officials who have  relentlessly singled out the Apex Companies and tried to coerce them into giving up their properties. The suit continues a multi-year disagreement between the city and property owner Andrew Gates, who has failed to do much with the nearly vacant department store building and surrounding surface parking lots.

Navy to make $39 million in repairs at Naval Station Newport to settle Clean Water Act violations

The US Navy has agreed to make more than $39 million in repairs at the Newport Naval Station in Rhode Island that will ensure the facility is in compliance with laws regulating the discharge of stormwater into Coddington Cove, an embayment of Narragansett Bay. “The projects under this agreement with the US Navy will help reduce discharges of soil to Coddington Cove,” said EPA Acting Assistant Administrator for Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Larry Starfield.”Rhode Island communities will benefit through improved water quality in Narragansett Bay.” Under the terms of a recent agreement with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Navy will complete stormwater discharge infrastructure improvements by 2030 at the former Derecktor Shipyard, settling EPA allegations that the facility was in violation of the Clean Water Act. The repairs include seven specific projects along the bulkhead, a retaining wall along the waterfront.

NARRAGANSETT, RI Summer may still feel awhile way in Rhode Island, but season parking passes are already on sale for the 2021 season. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management encouraged residents to buy their passes in advance, online, to avoid backups at the parking lot. Anyone who buys their pass online will be able to use special express lanes at parking lots, allowing for faster entry. East Beach, Charlestown Breachway and Salty Brine beaches will not have express lanes, since each only have a single entrance lane.
