Opinion/Trevvett: Our transit system deserves a greater investment

Philip Trevvett is board chair of Urban Greens Co-op Market in Providence. When I presented to Vice President Kamala Harris, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and the entire Rhode Island congressional delegation about Urban Greens Co-op Market and the power of the cooperative model two weeks ago, I was told to expect a question from the vice president. When she asked me about the importance of public transportation to our community-owned grocery store in Providence, it took me by surprise. While it wasn’t what I was expecting, it was an excellent question, since public transportation is critically important to our mission and focus. 

Ramps At I-95, Rt 10 To Close Overnight In Cranston

(Scott Anderson/Patch) CRANSTON, RI Cranston drivers who hit the roads at night should plan ahead for delays and closures in the area of I-95 and Route 10, according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. In a news release, RIDOT announced ramps connecting the two roadways will close intermittently from 9 p.m. to 6 p.m. starting Sunday. Overnight closures could continue as-needed over the next three months. RIDOT said the ramp from I-95 North to Route 10 North will close nightly on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. Drivers will be required to detour at exit 16 and keep right for the Elmwood Avenue ramp. They will then make a left at the signal and turn right onto a Route 10 North on ramp.

(Breeze photo by Robert Emerson) Road diet still on the table WOONSOCKET – The Rhode Island State Traffic Commission has voted against installing a light at the intersection of Diamond Hill and Walnut Hill roads, one of several safety measures considered after a man died at the intersection last June. Members of the State Traffic Commission voted unanimously last Wednesday, May 5, against installing a traffic light at the intersection. The request was initially put before the commission for consideration by state Rep. Robert Phillips last year.

(Shutterstock) JOHNSTON, RI The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has announced that it will temporarily close Greenville Avenue at the I-295 overpass in Johnston during overnight hours Wednesday, May 5. The closure will take place from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. and is required to remove a temporary bridge that was built to carry traffic during bridge construction. Westbound traffic will use the I-295 North on-ramp, get off at Exit 12A, and use I-295 South to Exit 10 to get back to Greenville Avenue. Eastbound traffic will use I-295 South, get off at Exit 9C, and use I-295 North to Exit 10 to Greenville Avenue.
