As an incentive, the Tuolumne County OES Department has set up a “Firewise” information booth in Courthouse Park in Sonora today (Tuesday, April 13) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The national Firewise USA® recognition program provides a collaborative framework to help neighbors in a geographic area get organized, find direction, and take action to increase the ignition resistance of their homes and community and to reduce wildfire risks at the local level, according to county OES officials.
On-hand to answer questions will be staff with the Tuolumne County OES, local Firewise Program representatives, and Tuolumne County Fire representatives. They will also detail how the community and neighborhoods can initiate a Firewise program and about the importance of wildfire preparedness. Crystal Falls Fire
Sonora, CA Tuolumne County Fire officials have determined the cause of a blaze that burned a vehicle and then spread to a home in the Crystal Falls area.
It was caused by hot ashes that were put into a flammable trash can. The fire happened at around 1:30pm on Thursday in the 21000 block of Crystal Lake Drive.
Tuolumne County Fire Department officials report, “Home heating-related fires are a leading cause of home fires and home fire deaths each year in the US.”
“Improperly disposed of ashes start many fires locally causing thousands of dollars of damage, sometimes destroying entire homes.”
FRIDAY, JAN. 22
3:22 p.m. – Modesto Engine 29 responded to Highway 108 and Kennedy Road in the community of Knights Ferry to assist Tuolumne County Fire with securing a helicopter landing zone for a patient from out of the county.
8:02 p.m. – Modesto, Stanislaus and Ceres units responded to a working structure fire in the 3000 block of Gatesville Avenue. Crews arrived on scene with an active fire in the attic and around the exterior of the chimney. The fire was contained to the attic, wall and roof of the second story. No injuries were reported. Fire cause was accidental in nature related to a wood burning stove.
