The Chico jazz group Bogg performed April 2 at Laxson Auditorium for a livestream event.
Chico News and Review’s Jason Cassidy joined the band onstage to guide the conversation around the band members and their music. The performance will be available on-demand until May 2 thru the University box office website.
The band formed back in 2012 when Josh Hegg and Micheal Bone wanted to experiment with keyboard and drum music. They later added Gavin Fitzgerald as the bassist. Shortly after, the group played their first gig at Cafe Coda, where they performed in papier-mache masks.
“This led to us toning it down a bunch, leaning further towards straight-ahead jazz but still with our experimental, alternative roots.” Bone said.

CHICO, Calif. - Have you sent out any Christmas cards yet? This year you can send virtual holiday musical greetings from the talented students and professors from California State University, Chico. Glorious Sounds of the Season is the annual holiday event performed at Laxson Auditorium each December. It always features students, professors, and the Chico State Music Department s honor bands and ensembles.
The Yule Logs aren’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic stop them from spreading holiday cheer. They recently performed a concert at Chico State’s Laxson Auditorium and the video premiered on Dec. 4.
Since there was no in-person audience for the concert, the band performed with their backs to the theater, which was lit up in blue. This created a visually appealing backlight, in combination with the string lights over the stage.
The lack of a live audience didn’t deter them from delivering an energetic and enthusiastic performance, however. Guitarist Maurice Spencer and bassist Kirt Lind bounced around during faster songs and lead singer Marty Parker sprinted all over the stage and the backstage area, too.
