African scientists want to decolonize a US-funded health effort — Quartz Africa

April 21, 2021 A recently published letter by a group of prominent African scientists and health practitioners to international funders has reignited a conversation over the funding models used by western governments and global health institutions for the continent. In January, the global nonprofit PATH, which is headquartered in the US ,announced it had been chosen by the US President’s Malaria Initiative to lead a $30 million malaria project in Africa. Seven other institutions in the US, the UK and Australia were listed as partners in the initiative, including departments at MIT, Harvard, and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. While these groups all collaborate with African research institutions, the fact that not one of the lead organizations on the project was based primarily in Africa took some aback.

A hell of a lot of people who have voted National for a long time must have switched to Labour. We may eventually have sound evidence as to why this happened, but I d think that keeping the Greens out of government is a believable motivation for a lot of people. Along with many other reasons, but it would be the world s biggest coincidence if the lion s share of them wasn t Covid-related in one way or another, as Labour s meteoric rise concided exactly with the pandemic hysteria and there has been basically no other news this year.
