The ties between mental health and running

Last April, Vicki Leaper’s husband Mark was struggling with his mental health so she set a goal to spend one day of the weekend doing an outdoor activity, regardless of the weather. After outdoor activities became a part of their regular routine, Mark’s mental health greatly improved, Vicki said, board member at the Disability Action Center “A lot of people don’t realize how outdoor exercise can help mental health,” Vicki said. The DAC is a center that provides resources to people with any sort of disability, Vicki said. Most people on the board of the DAC have disabilities, so they offer peer-to-peer help.

Second annual mental health 5K to be held virtually

The Latah Alliance on Mental Illness is hosting the second annual walk for mental illness May 1-8.  The first walk was held in person in 2019 and was a huge success, said event coordinator Jensen Southwick. It was started to help spread awareness and hope for individuals who have been affected by mental illness.  “In 2020, that wasn’t possible in the light of COVID,” Southwick said. “So we kind of picked it up this year with the modifications of a virtual event.” Southwick said the event will occur over the course of a week to give participants the leisure to do it any day that works for them. It will also allow individuals to walk as many miles as they can.
