Lubbock Avalanche-Journal A California man sentenced in 2017 to three years in federal prison for causing a disruption that forced a DFW-bound flight to make an emergency landing in Lubbock is back in court after federal prosecutors say he violated the conditions of his supervised release. Jerry Ba Nguyen, who is being held at the Bailey County Detention Center, appeared on March 11 without an attorney before Magistrate D. Gordon Bryant for an initial appearance after federal prosecutors moved to revoke his supervised release. Nguyen started his term of supervised release on July 10, 2019. The conditions of his supervised release included abstaining from controlled substances and participating in a substance abuse treatment program.

Weekend storms bring tornados and heavy rain, but little damage to South Plains Lubbock and much of the South Plains were spared the brunt of the devastation parts of the Panhandle saw from the weekend s storms, which mostly brought beneficial rainfall to the Lubbock area along with some reports of damage. We did have a number of confirmed tornadoes over our area, but most were over open country and didn t cause any significant damage, said Robert Barritt, lead forecaster with the National Weather Service office in Lubbock. The weather service database of storm reports online shows about a half dozen confirmed or spotted tornadoes around the South Plains Friday and Saturday, including near Shallowater, Hale Center, Nazareth and Ralls, among others.

Lubbock Utilities building suffered substantial damage in flood The City of Lubbock says it is still assessing the damage from the flooding that occurred Friday night in the basement of Citizens Tower and the adjacent City of Lubbock Utilities Customer Service building.  Matt Rose, spokesperson for Lubbock Utilities, which includes Lubbock Power & Light, said the Lubbock Utilities building suffered substantial damage. At Citizens Tower, City Manager Jarrett Atkinson says the flooding reached the city s Information Technology offices, which are located in the basement of Citizens Tower, and the elevator shafts. The water reached about 18 inches above floor level in some areas.
