State Supreme Court denies appeal in Lafourche child rape case

The state Supreme Court denied a request from a Raceland man seeking to have his conviction thrown out for sexually assaulting three children in 2014.  Christopher Gaudet, 36, was convicted Nov. 6, 2015, of aggravated rape and was sentenced to life in prison. A jury found him guilty of forcing three children – then ages 3, 7 and 9 – to have oral sex with him.    The Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office originally arrested him July 16, 2014.   In interviews with juvenile investigators, the youngest and oldest children disclosed the sexual abuse, though the middle child did not. The oldest child said it happened more than once.  Gaudet later appealed to the 1st Circuit Court of Appeal in Baton Rouge but was denied in 2016. His attorneys argued there was a lack of physical evidence and inconsistencies between the children’s statements and testimony. They contended that the rape allegations could have stemmed from an ex-boyfriend’s desire to rekindle his relations

Houma-Thibodaux area police take part in Torch Run to raise money for Special Olympics

Police from different agencies laced up their running shoes Wednesday to help raise money for Special Olympics Louisiana.  The yearly Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics returned in-person in Thibodaux after being delayed a year due to the pandemic. Though last year’s event was held virtually, nothing captures the spirit like running alongside your fellow officers, Karla Loupe said.  The Lafourche Parish sheriff’s deputy has been participating in the Torch Run for 14 years but decided to try something different this year.   “It feels great,” Loupe said. “I usually ride a bike but since it’s a shorter distance this year because of COVID, I thought I would try to run it. It’s great to be back.”
