Windsor-Essex tops 5,000 COVID-19 cases

There are 105 residents of long-term care and retirement homes with COVID-19, along with 62 staff members. That includes an outbreak at The Village at St. Clair where one resident has died as a result of the disease and 54 others  have been infected, along with 34 staff members, according to an update on the home s website.  There are also 21 cases of COVID-19, with more results pending, across three outbreaks on farms, Ahmed said. Of the new cases announced Wednesday, 27 are connected to outbreaks, five are contacts of confirmed cases, two were community acquired and 79 are under investigation.

Windsor-Essex has 890 active cases of COVID-19, with 57 positive cases in hospital and 11 of those in intensive care. Windsor hospitals have an additional 79 patients with suspected cases of COVID-19 who are still awaiting their test results. Approximately 10 per cent of people who contract COVID-19 locally spend at least one day in hospital, Ahmed said. Between two and three per cent of cases will die. “It’s unfortunate that (cases) really increased,” Ahmed said. “I believed maybe our good numbers for some time in September and October may have given a false sense of security, and the impression to the community that they are not at risk. It resulted in transmission.”
