Sage s Sea Moss: from the coast of Saint Lucia to Lafayette

Cajun jam music sessions bring fais do-do to Lafayette Farmers Market

This article is part of an ongoing Friday series about the vendors at the Lafayette Farmers Market. Under the oaks of the Lafayette Farmers Market, musicians of all skill levels, ages and instruments come together to jam. The people I interact with at these jams have great characters, Forest Huval said, one of the first market jam leaders and a local Lafayette musician. Since the farmers market at Moncus Park, formerly Horse Farm, opened there have been weekly Cajun music jam sessions. From 9 a.m. til 11 a.m., musicians gather to play songs together. There are no rules other than to have fun maybe learn a new chord or tune.

Gonsoulin Land and Cattle Company has centuries of history in Acadiana

This article is part of an ongoing Friday series about the vendors at the Lafayette Farmers Market. In 1770, Jean Francios de Beaumelle Gonsoulin, a land surveyor for the King of France, registered his brand in St. Martin Parish. More than 250 years later, Francios  descendant Shannon Gonsoulin has maintained the namesake with Gonsoulin Land and Cattle Company. A staple at the Lafayette Farmers Market, the New Iberia-based meat company boasts a long lineage of butchers, meat market operators and, most recently, a grass-fed cattle ranch. Back to basics: raising cattle as nature intended In 2005, Gonsoulin, a veterinarian, started hearing about natural and organic products gaining speed. He had cattle at the time and saw the niche market as a way to improve the ranch.
