Howe man arrested for money laundering

LAGRANGE — A Howe man on Monday was arrested and charged with money laundering, a Level 6 felony, for allegedly extorting a large sum of cash from a local Amish man. Roberto Alvez, 40, of the 4800 block of S.R. 9 North, Howe, was arrested and taken into custody by the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department. Documents filed with the LaGrange Superior Court said, Alvez is accused of sending a threatening letter in July 2020 to a local Amish man he was familiar with. In that letter, Alvez allegedly said he would kill the Amish man unless he sent Alvez a check for $7,500. Alvez is said to have instructed the man to mail the check to his address along with a letter saying the money was a gift.

Stroh Days returns this Friday and Saturday

STROH — After canceling its annual summer street festival Stroh Days last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, Stroh fire department officials are hoping to make this Friday and Saturday’s two-day event the best Stroh Days celebration yet. Stroh Days returns to Stroh starting this Friday for a town-wide garage sale, kicking off at 8 a.m. A fire department sponsored corn hole tournament starts in the lot next to the fire station at 6 p.m. An annual pie-eating contest starts at 7 p.m. Friday’s highlight is the annual “Blue Light Parade.” Cars participating in that the parade will start lining up at the Stroh Church of Christ shortly before dusk. The parade then winds its way through town and along Big Turkey Lake just after sunset.

Two separate crashes result in deaths of two horses By: Maura Johnson LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. – Two different crashes along U.S. 20 have resulted in the deaths of two horses, the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Office reported. At 5:35 a.m. Tuesday morning, police were called to U.S. 20 near C.R. 1200 W. for reports of accidents involving vehicles and horses. The driver of one vehicle, a Greenwood, Indiana man, was traveling westbound on U.S. 20 when he hit a horse in the road, causing heavy damage to the hood and the top of the vehicle. The vehicle continued its momentum northwest into a field.
