BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS call for health department for Lancaster County

Manheim Township’s Board of Commissioners is calling for Lancaster County to create a countywide health department. Board President Tom O’Brien says Lancaster County, home to more than half a million people, is the largest county in the state without a health department. “Most of the places that we talk to feel that the communications level, not only with the state, but on a one-to-one basis with each municipality, probably would be stronger if they knew each other, if they had experience with each other, and they had a plan in place,” O’Brien said.Currently municipalities and school districts deal directly with the state. Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, the county has hired a person to coordinate some aspects of public health response.

First UK COVID variant found in Lancaster County

KLKN-TV March 10, 2021 3:56 pm LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) The first case of the U.K. or B.1.1.7, COVID-19 variant has been identified in Lancaster County. The individual is a man in his 20’s. This is the second COVID variant found in Lancaster County, with B.1.429, or the California variant found late February. Current data suggests that the COVID-19 vaccines do protect against variants, but the research is still ongoing. “Variants can spread more easily and quickly, and they can lead to more cases of COVID-19. We want to continue to take preventive actions to control the spread of COVID-19 and its variants in our community, which include getting the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as it’s available to you,” said Health Director Pat Lopez.
